Dec 30, 2016 Trainer Interviews

Clevedon trainer Barry Purdon has a mammoth team of 14 horses lining up at The Park this NYE & with his brother Mark & training partner Natalie Rasmussen having dominated in the feature races here at The Park over the past month, this Saturday night Barry will be looking to put an end to that reign & he looks a sneaky chance of providing what would be considered on the tote to be a few major upsets. The team has been going well since the beginning of the new season and with a massive team all ready to go for Saturday night, he looks a good chance of continuing that good run into 2017. The AP newsdesk caught up with the man nicknamed 'Big Bar' & here's what he had to say.

Race 1 (3) South Beach Arden – “He’s come up really nicely for this race and we are expecting him to go pretty well in this first up. He”s been  ticking over nicely at the workouts on the back of qualifying in pretty impressive style and even though it’s a big step up from the trials & workouts to race night, especially straight into a heat of the Young Guns series, he is such a lovely mannered horse who comes up with a nice draw and we expect him to be right in the thick of things.”

Race 2 (8) Ideal Belle – “She has been a a bit disappointing in recent weeks and we can’t really put it down to anything in particular. I can’t say her work has been great as she always works so well but she gets into this race quite nicely and the conditions of the race will suit her down to the ground. Mango hops on in the hope that something different might be able to work the oracle. We are hopeful as we know how good she can be but on her recent form she would need to be taken on trust.”

Race 3 (4) Quevert – “He’s trained on really well since his strong first up effort for second in behind race rival King Of The Roses on the 16th. That horse goes back 10m from us after that effort and with only two off the front and the way he has trained on, he rates as a serious winning chance and probably our best for the night.”

Race 4 (5) Lady Madonna – “She hasn’t had a great deal of luck throughout her career to date but we know that the ability is there even though it hasn’t always showed. This race is another bit of a step up for her but she has come through her most recent run well and we expect her to be competitive in this.”

Race 6 (10) Loveonthelawn – “She’s a real head scratcher this girl. All the talent is there but she can be moody and put on a real performance at times as her short career to date has shown. We have changed a few things with her including her shoes and we are hoping that can make a bit of difference and get her around in one piece. If she was to behave, the way she is working at home and the ability we know she has, taking this race out would be well within her capabilities but she is another that at this stage is for the brave.”

Race 7 (2) Jack’s Legend – “He peaks for this race nicely and we couldn’t be happier with him leading into it. He’s a classy customer this guy and from the good draw of 2, he gets his chance to taste Group One glory, despite having to come up against that one of Mark’s who has looked unbeateable in recent weeks.”

Race 7 (9) Accumulator – “He could be a little sneaky chance of filling a place this guy as following out one on the second line will suit. He follows speed well and always keeps on trying. He will enjoy the hard tempo that is likely to be set in this and he is well capable of coming underneath them late and filling a hole at odds.”

Race 7 (12) Circles – “He’s currently second emergency and looks unlikely to get a start. If he got into the field, he would be up against it been a non-winner but he does have his share of ability and filling the thinner end of combo’s might not be out of reach.”

Race 8 (5) Le Reveur – “He’s up against it in this racing the likes of Marcoola & co but  he’s come through his recent racing well and comes into this race in good shape. It will be tough to toss Marcoola on the back of his dominating win at Cambridge but our guy loves the track and couldn’t be ruled out of a top three spot with the right run.”

Race 9 (1) Hug The Wind – “He has trained on really well since his fresh up third in the Franklin Cup and we are really happy with him leading into the big race. He had a good hitout at home on Monday and he comes into Saturday feeling bright and well. Brent has a good association with him and from the inside of the front row, the way he steps we would expect him to put himself into the race from the outset. He strips a better horse for that Franklin Cup run and we are expecting him to account for himself well in this.”

Race 9 (5) Arden’s Choice – “She comes into this race off the back of some really solid and competitive performances against some really nice types in recent weeks and we would expect her to run another similarly competitive race on Saturday night. Her standing start manners are good, she has trained on well since her last start and she has to be given a chance.”

Race 9 (6) The Faithful – “He never goes a bad race this boy and he gives his best week in week out. Cup class is always a test for any horse but he comes into this race in good shape, has good standing start manners and shouldn’t have any issues seeing out the 3200m, which means he too is another that isn’t without a show of filling a place.”

Race 10 (1) Raptors Flight – “He’s come up with the gun draw and gets his chance to show his best in this. He’s a bit of a sticker so he will appreciate it if the speed is on the whole way, which given the makeup of the field it looks like he should get that here. He has the ability to take this out and if he can get a run to suit, he would rate a good chance of getting some of this.”

Race 10 (8) Laredo Torpedo – “He’s drawn bad but he comes into this a better horse than his last start effort for third at Cambridge. He will need some luck in the running but if the speed is on like we are anticipating, ,has has a nice turn of speed and the ability to get into this late.”
